Thermogravimetry (TGA) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) boosts the capability of standalone TGA systems by including the ability to analyze the chemical composition of the gas(es) evolved from a material as it is heated. This technique is also known as evolved gas analysis (EGA). As the material undergoes a precisely controlled temperature protocol in the TGA, the volatile components are continuously channeled to the MS, via a heated transfer line, for detection of composition (see diagram below). Thus, the products of each mass change step in the TGA can be chemically identified to improve the understanding of the thermal degradation pathways of the material.
